Thesis Statement (Make a specific argument / Take a specific position) -The Soviet Union increased tension in the Cold War by continuing to participate, although it was partially out of need for homeland defense, in the technological competition between themselves and the US.______________________________________________________________________________Topic Sentence I – (baby thesis – make an argument)The USSR should have backed down in the Space Race as soon as they had a working ICBM for the purpose of defense only. Supporting Evidence (Fact) – The USSR caused mass panic and fear in the US when they launched Sputnik, as the satellite was thought to be able to spy on the United States. The US government had similar suspicions, so they had to reply with a Space program of their own, furthering tension through the Space Race. As said in the New York Times issue for October 5, 1957 “Soviets Fire Earth Sattelite into Space; It is Circling the Earth at 18,000 MPH; Sphere tracked in 4 Crossing Across the US”. The fact that the Soviets could spy on the US so easily scared the public and the Government.(Quote from textbook pg 556)______________________________________________________________________________Topic Sentence II – (baby thesis – make an argument) The USSR shouldn’t have produced a Hydrogen Bomb, as an Atom Bomb was just as useful in the event of all-out war if used strategically. Supporting Evidence (Fact) – The H-Bomb was extremely overkill and neither countries should have produced one. However, the Soviets kept the competition going by creating a Hydrogen Bomb. They could have backed down as to convince the Americans that there was no need for an extremely large nuclear arsenal. As shown in this quote, the Soviets were untrustworthy of the Americans because “The Soviets were not initially informed of this new, immensely powerful weapon until the Potsdam Conference in July 1945…”, showing that the US could be hiding any type of new weapon. (Quote from Seminar Packet)______________________________________________________________________________Topic Sentence III – (baby thesis – make an argument)The Soviet Union should not have given aid to North Korea before their invasin of South Korean because of the rather large loss of human life that could happen very quickly. Supporting Evidence (Fact) -If the Soviets did not supply North Korea with military equipment, the Korean War would have ended much more swift than it did. The Soviets also would not have lost equipmetn for no gain, as North Korea lost either way. As said in a Political Cartoon, the Korean War could’ve become “World War III In Asia” if things got out of hand. If Soviet Russia helped North Korea too much, there could’ve been a bloodier battle that could have spread to China and the rest of Asia. ______________________________________________________________________________Conclusion (1-2 sentences that brings your argument to a close) – Overall, the Soviet Union increased tension in the Cold War by continuing to participate, although it was partially out of need for homeland defense, in the technological competition between themselves and the US. If the Soviets didn’t continue to compete with the US, the US would have stopped improving their technology for the use in war.
